Your upcoming move to New Zealand cannot be undertaken without your furry family member accompanying you.

Before you know it, you will be strolling on one of the beautiful beaches with your beloved pet.

The preparation process for pets travelling to New Zealand can take up to 6 months from start to finish. It is however very important to plan ahead and to make sure that you contact us timeously to prevent any unnecessary delays in your pet’s relocation arrangements.

Some helpful information to kick off the preparation process:

  1. Microchip

Make an appointment at your vet if your pet does not have a microchip implanted or if you are unsure if your pet has a microchip. A microchip should be implanted before or at the same time that the Rabies and annual vaccinations are administered.

If your pet already has a microchip ask your vet to check the microchip to make sure that it is still in working order. It is important that the microchip can be read by an Avid, Trovan, Destron or any other ISO compatible microchip reader. If your vet cannot read your pet’s microchip you should have a new microchip implanted and a new Rabies and annual vaccination would need to be given.

  1. Rabies and Annual Vaccinations

Your pet’s primary Rabies vaccination must be at least 6 months old before departure to New Zealand.

It is important to take note that a Rabies vaccination can only be given to a puppy or kitten when they are older than 3 months.

It is advisable to keep your pets vaccinations current; this means that the vaccinations has to be updated annually either on the same day each year or before the date that is written in the vaccination book.

  1. Rabies Titre Blood Test

Once your pet’s rabies vaccination is older than 30 days but not older than one year you would need to make an appointment with your private vet for the Rabies Antibody Titre blood test.

The Rabies Titre blood test needs to be at least 3 calendar months old (92 days) before departure. The test cannot be older than 24 months when a pet arrives in New Zealand.

  1. Quarantine & Import Permit

While waiting for the Rabies vaccination and the Rabies Titre blood test to become valid you can book and apply for the Quarantine space and the Import permit.

There are three quarantine stations in Auckland and one quarantine station in Christchurch to choose from. We would be able to arrange onward travel for your pet should your final destination be Wellington.

The Quarantine space needs to be booked before you can apply for the import permit. It can take a maximum of 21 working days to receive an import permit.

All dogs and cats arriving into New Zealand from South Africa must go into quarantine for at least 10 days or longer. After the minimum 10 day quarantine, a release inspection is performed. The release inspections will not take place on weekends or on public holidays and it may not occur on a daily basis at each quarantine facility.

  1. Final Tests & Treatments

The final veterinary tests and treatments needs to be done in the last 30 days before your pet’s departure.

There are specific treatments that must be done for cats and dogs. Dogs would also need to undergo further blood tests and treatments.

Your consultant will hold your hand and guide you through the process step by step by providing you with your pets own tailor-made timeline.

The final Health Certificate appointment must be done within 2 days of departure. We will take your pet for this final vet appointment to ensure that all of the documentation is in order.  Once the final Health Certificate has been done at a private vet we will take all of the documentation to the State Vet for their final endorsement.

On the day of departure the state vet will come to our premises to seal your pet in the travel crate. It is a requirement from New Zealand that all pets are sealed in their travel crates in the country of departure. The seal is only broken on arrival in New Zealand.

Our dedicated Pet Travel Consultants aim to alleviate the extra stresses that goes with moving your furry family member to a new country. By following the guidance and specialized timelines that we provide, everything will work out well.

Before you know it, you and your furry friend will be ready for the new adventure!

  8. I have cats. You stated they get sealed in a container. No water or food . Are they serdated? Cats are not like dogs.

    1. Good day Alexandra. They do not get sealed in a container. The pets are placed in pet travel crates which are specially designed to give you pet the most comfortable travel. They are given food and water in the crates. We do not sedate our travelling pets as that may pose a threat to the animal. We do provide calming gels for cats. You can email one of our travel consultants for more information. travel@side8-testing.com

  9. Hi there I notice that your information above states “On the day of departure the state vet will come to our premises to seal your pet in the travel crate. It is a requirement from New Zealand that all pets are sealed in their travel crates in the country of departure. The seal is only broken on arrival in New Zealand”. I thought that if flights were via Dubai on Emirates that they would be taken out of the crate and walked around a bit while in Dubai?
