Import / Transit Requirements for Cats and Dogs into Mauritius

Age Of Animal

Puppies and kittens have to be older than 7 months. Puppies and kittens have to travel on their own valid rabies, annual vaccinations and Rabies Neutralization Antibody Titre Tests.

Microchip

Required prior or at the same time as Rabies Vaccination. it is recommended that microchip brands should confirm to the ISO standard.

Rabies Vaccinations

Dogs:

Have to be vaccinated against rabies when at least 3 (three) months of age and at least 6 (six) months before export, and less than 12 months. This is applicable for a primary and booster vaccination.

Cats:

Have to be vaccinated against rabies when at least 3 (three) months of age and within two to twelve months prior to export.

Rabies Neutralizing Antibody Titre Test (RNATT)

The pet must be accompanied by a laboratory result form, from a laboratory approved by the government veterinary authorities of the exporting country, stating that the animal was subjected to two neutralizing antibody titration tests at 3 months interval.

The second test must be performed at least 1 month and not more than 6 months prior to export and found to have at least 0.5 IU/ml of antibody in its serum. The laboratory result forms must clearly identify die animal to be imported using the microchip identification number of the pet. Blood collection for the first rabies test should be done at least 30 days and not more than a year following the
last rabies vaccination.

Normal Canine and Feline vaccinations

Normal Canine and Feline vaccinations are required.

Other Blood Tests For Dogs

Within 45 days prior to departure dogs has to be tested and found free of Erlichiosis using the indirect fluorescent antibody test and Brucella Canis using the slide agglutination test (microscopic agglutination test) with a negative result.

Import Permit

An Import Permit is required.

Importation of the following breeds of dogs are not allowed into Mauritius:

Post Arrival Quarantine

A minimum of one month quarantine is required should all the import requirements be met.

Health Certificate (Valid for 10 days)

The pets have to be accompanied by a health certificate issued by a private veterinarian certifying compliance with the above requirements and countersigned by the State Vet.

The pet has been treated by a long lasting insecticide (name must be indicated) against ectoparasites and they are free from external parasites at the time of export.

The health certificate has to be done within 48 hours of departure.
