Import / Transit Requirements for Cats and Dogs into Kenya

Age Of Animal

Puppies and kittens can enter Kenya.

Microchip

A microchip should be implanted before or at the same time of the rabies vaccination. The microchip number has to appear on all of the documentation.

Rabies Vaccinations

A valid rabies vaccination that was given when the pet was at least 3 months old. The primary rabies vaccination has to be older than 6 months and not older than one year prior to the shipment.

In case of a booster vaccination, the booster vaccination cannot be older than one year.

Rabies Neutralizing Antibody Titre Test (RNATT)

The blood sample must be taken at least 30 or 31 days after the rabies vaccination. The Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test with a positive result equivalent to at least 0.5 IU/ml or more. The blood test has to be older than 3 months and not older than 24 months prior to shipment

OR

The pet/s have not been vaccinated against rabies or do not meet all the conditions set out in points 2, 3, and 4 above. In such cases, the Kenyan authorities may require the placing of the animals in a quarantine station for up to 6 months at the owner of the animal.

Normal Canine and Feline vaccinations

Annual canine and feline vaccinations are recommended. Kennel cough vaccinations and snuffles vaccinations for cats are also recommended, should your pet require boarding before or after they travel all reputable kennels would insist that you produce a valid vaccination certificate.

Import Permit

Import permit is required, the permit is valid for 90 days from the date of issue.

Health Certificate

The pets have to be accompanied by a health certificate issued by a private veterinarian certifying compliance with the above requirements and this Health Certificate must be stamped & signed by the SA State Vet.

The Health certificate must completed within 48 hours of embarkation.
